What is this Yoga?

- Süreyya Ural

The origin of the word Yoga comes from "Yuj." Yuj means "to unite, to join, and to yoke." What is primarily conquered is the integration of Body – Mind – Spirit. From this unity, we experience the sweet fruit of the Nothingness state in Sufi Philosophy. As we continue, we transition from existence within everything to seeing the reflection of our essence in everything, thus moving from singularity to wholeness, and from everythingness to an infinite and eternal nothingness...

Of course, for the modern city dweller, experiencing these "awarenesses" continuously, like someone living a hermitic life in seclusion, may be impossible... It is quite natural for our Monkey-Minded Ego to occasionally interfere, and it is quite nourishing for continued development.

However, once we taste the essence of this practice and philosophy, there is no turning back... albeit slowly and with setbacks... as the spirit desires to experience itself in its rightful places, the body and mind learn to follow its footsteps.

You might find that your hands no longer ache as much, you learn to soften and let go more quickly... The thin line between surrender and giving up thickens with your experience, and your faith in yourself is renewed. You might also notice that the burdens on your shoulders have lightened... a more childlike joy and gratitude have enveloped your heart... This is all Yoga!

Yoga was developed thousands of years ago in India as mental and physical defense practices by people living apart from the community. The greatest defense here is learning to confront our insatiable, skeptical mind, which is inherently anxious and constructed.

The phrase "Know yourself" reminds us that the concept of conquest has primarily started with ourselves throughout history. For example, when your emotions – thoughts – behaviors – words – dreams align with the path you are walking... that is precisely what yoga is.

Thank goodness for it.

In the next post, I will share a simple and essential practice... Finally, you will be able to interpret YOGA with your own experience... As they say: 99% Practice... 1% Philosophy. Let’s try it together...
